Barbara Simmons

Barbara Christine Nelson Simmons passed away January 31, 2020, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Ovilla, Texas. She was born to Talma and Benjamin Nelson March 13, 1938 in Colton, South Dakota.

Barbara married Samuel C. Simmons August 28, 1959. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and graduated with honors in 1960. After Sam “landed” a job as a pilot with Eastern Airlines, they moved to Plantation, Florida in 1966 where they resided until 1994. They then moved to Castle Rock, Colorado. In 2008, they moved to Ovilla, Texas to be close to family.

Barbara was very involved in the education system in Broward County, Florida. She served as president of Broward County PTA from 1973 to 1975. She also served on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a liaison to the commission on Elementary Schools. Barbara was a member of the Superintendent’s Commission on Public Education where she was instrumental to the advancement and improvement of education in Broward County. She received numerous awards in the field of education.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Talma and Benjamin Nelson and her brother, David Nelson. She is survived by her husband, Samuel C. Simmons; daughters, Beth and her husband David Griffin and Laura Wyatt; Grandsons, Michael, Sean and Scott Griffin and grand-daughter, Stephanie Wyatt.

A visitation for Barbara Simmons will be held at Wayne Boze Funeral Home Monday, February 3, 2020 from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Her service will be held at Ovilla United Methodist Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 2 pm followed by internment at Shiloh Cemetery.
