Griggs Winston Winn
12-31-1919
07-14-2008

Griggs Winston Winn died Monday, July 14th, 2008 in Waxahachie, Texas. He was 88 years old. Winston was born in Maypearl, Texas on December 31, 1919 to Wattie Nay Beard and Griggs Alexander Winn. He was a lifelong resident of Maypearl. He attended Progress School through the 7th grade and then Maypearl High School, where he graduated in 1938. Winston served in the Army Air Corp during WWII, stationed in both Indiana and California. He married Mary Prudence Presley of Plum Grove, on November 14, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona.
Winston was a farmer and a rancher his entire life in and around Maypearl. He retired in 1981 from active farming, but maintained close ties with his community. He served on the Ellis County Appraisal Board for many years. He loved Maypearl, Texas - the community has lost one of its most unique personalities and biggest supporters. He was a founding member of the Maypearl Service Club. Winston was always willing to help those in need, always requesting his name remain anonymous.
His lifelong passion was baseball. He loved to watch and play the game. Winston played baseball from the time he was a young boy until his mid-30s, when he played in a semi-pro league. One of his most vivid memories is stealing home plate in 1937 to beat Red Oak for the Ellis County Championship. He could run, hit the ball, and was quite an accomplished 3rd baseman. In later years, he loved the Texas Rangers and enjoyed watching the Waxahachie Indians, especially when his grandson, Wess, was playing.
Winston was a unique character. He had an endearing charm and quick wit. His dry sense of humor and storytelling ability is legendary. He always greeted you with a joke or a tease, coming from a curled up grin and a pair of piercing, mischievous blue eyes. He was honest and direct - a hardworking farmer who lived off the land his entire life. He loved Gene Autrey, cowboy hats and cowboy boots. He loved to play dominoes and have long talks with his lifelong buddies at the mobile station and cotton gin in Maypearl. He was a loyal friend and his handshake stood for something. Those who knew Winston well know what lay beyond his crusty exterior - a tender heart that would give you the shirt off his back. He will never be forgotten and will always be loved.
He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Lee Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Susan Winn. He was known as 'Pa' to his five grandchildren: David Splawn and his wife, Cynthia; Kathy Splawn; Nicole Covington Bowman and her husband, Jimi; Misti Winn Harriss and her husband, Robin; Wess Griggs Winn and his wife, Elizabeth; Emilie Winn McDowell and her husband, Chris. Most of all, he dearly loved his six great grandchildren: Nicholas Splawn, Winn Alexander Harriss, Bailey Griggs "BG" Winn, Belle Winn, Audrey Winn and Lily McDowell.
Pallbearers are Bubba Townsend, Erik Totten, Brian "Doc" Watson, Pat Wheatley, Tom Almand, and Terry Hodges. Honorary Pallbearers are the citizens and friends he loved so much in Maypearl, Texas.
Services to celebrate his life are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of Wayne Boze Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at the Maypearl Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
