Winnie Hunter Wharton
September 21, 1914 - April 2, 2007
Winnie Wharton, age 92, loved and respected by all who knew her, passed away on April 2, 2007 in Waxahachie, Texas. Born in Haskell County, Texas to William and Dora Hunter on September 21, 1914 she began a long, beautiful life of love and service to her family, her God and her community.
Winnie was reared on farmlands in West Texas with 7 brothers and 2 sisters when times were hard. The only surviving sister, she learned early to be a hard worker and care-giver and to put family first. Although her formal education was shortened by family responsibilities, many years later she completed high school through an equivalency exam and took college courses at Navarro College.
Winnie married her childhood sweetheart and the love or her life, John Franklin Wharton, on January 14, 1933. They were blessed with five children. In 1944 Winnie and Johnnie began a lifetime of church ministry in small Baptist churches including Ovilla, Garland, and Midlothian. After Johnnie left the pulpit ministry, they continued their Christian ministry by serving as cottage parents in two children's homes in Waxahachie. They were devoted to each other for 47 years until Johnnie passed away in 1980.
Winnie was a doting mother and grandmother who by example taught her children to be God fearing and God loving, to value an education, to be hard-working and honest and to be giving to others. In addition to her lifelong church ministry and daily attention to her family and friends, she gave to the community by cooking and caring for the sick and by giving 14 years of volunteer service to the hospital.
For the last 20 years Winnie was active in the First Baptist Church in Waxahachie. To friends and family she was an inspiration, forever young in body and spirit. She was a wonderful cook, a skillful seamstress and quilt maker, and a Bible scholar. Winnie was a special lady who will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son,Verlin Neal Wharton and 2 sons-in-law - Richard E. Bunch and Charles L. Taylor. She was also preceded by 2 young sisters - Ruby and Virginia, and 3 brothers - Jack Hunter, Bennie Hunter and Marshall Hunter.
Winnie is survived by a son, Donald D. Wharton and his wife, Shirley, three daughters - Comellia Joy Elliott and her husband, Jim; Barbara Ramsey and her husband, Billy; Elena Taylor; and a grandson, Victor J. Wharton. There are 16 other surviving grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Wednesday, April 4, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Wayne Boze Funeral Home and the memorial service is Thursday, April 5, 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Waxahachie. Interment will be at Sardis Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
