William Newcomb, Jr.

Mr. William Jennings Newcomb Jr., a resident of San Antonio for more than a half century, passed away at his home on September 2, 2011. He was 91 years old. Mr. Newcomb was born in Dallas, Texas, and was a graduate of North Dallas High School. He received a B.S.B.A from the University of Denver and an M.B.A. from St. Mary's University, San Antonio. Mr. Newcomb served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. While stationed at Lowry AFB, Colorado, he taught courses in radar, then a top secret invention vital to the air war effort. After the war, Mr. Newcomb joined the Civil Service and worked at Lowry AFB, Bryan AFB, Texas, and Randolph AFB, Texas. He retired from government service in 1975. Throughout his life Mr. Newcomb was an avid outdoorsman and particularly enjoyed hunting and fly fishing in Colorado, New Mexico, and Alaska. He was an accomplished and competitive golfer who regularly played in local tournaments, winning consecutive first place finishes in ‘93 and ‘94 in his division of the Senior City Men's Amateur Championship, until age and health issues forced him to put away his clubs. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and was a member of the Men's Garden Club of San Antonio. Mr. Newcomb was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a life member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Texas and served a term as Governor of the Society during 1989-91. He was predeceased by his wife of more than 60 years, Betty Gwen Newcomb, sisters Marie and Norma, and brothers Harold Ray (Pat) and Donald Jack. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Betty Lou Burney of Denton, Texas; children, William J. Newcomb III of Mclean, Virginia, and Mrs. Kathleen Nelson of Snyder, Texas; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10:30AM September 7, 2011, at Greenwood Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Attn. Donor Services, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, Florida 32256.
