William Dale Leggett, long time Baptist pastor and denominational leader went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 15th in Waxahachie, Texas at the age of 92 years.
Born in Seminary, Mississippi December 1, 1925, Dale moved his family to Texas where he embarked upon a life time of gospel ministry with churches in the Baptist Missionary Association of Texas. Among his pastorates were Community Baptist Church, Corsicana, First Baptist Church, Italy, First Baptist Church Joaquin, and College Avenue Baptist Church, Levelland.
From 1965 - 1973, Bro. Leggett served as the editor of the Baptist Progress, the official journal of the BMA of Texas. After his years with the Baptist Progress he served as pastor of Wyatt Drive Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Long Creek Baptist Church of Mesquite, a second tenure at Community, Corsicana, and his final pastorate, Kerens Missionary Baptist Church, Kerens.
Dale was an impeccable dresser, and he had a passion to encourage young people, especially young men who felt the call to the ministry. He was a friend and encourager to his preacher-friends, and was a supporter and helper to his colleagues in the denomination. He was always striving for excellence when it came to the Baptist Progress, and he drove hundreds of thousands of miles promoting not only the paper, but other aspects of the denomination.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Alton Lamont and Thelma Allene Leggett, Freddie Lou Sullivan Leggett and daughter Debbie Leggett Graves, a sister, Imogene Ruth Leggett, Velma Leggett, three grandsons, and one great grandson. Dale is survived by one son, Freddy Dale (wife Suzanne) of Oklahoma City, Okla. and a daughter, Cherrie (husband Larry) of Frisco; a sister, Martha Calhoun (husband Don), son-in-law Skeeter Graves, grandchildren Jace Leggett, Chelsea Graves, Rachel Lyons, and Jessica Graves, as well as five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., December 29, 2017, at First Baptist Church Blooming Grove, Texas, with Rev. Grady Cashion conducting the service. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a memorial contribution to the Ellis-Hill Baptist Association. Services are under the direction of Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
