Will Witten, Sr.

Will David Witten, Sr., was born on May 1st, 1954 in the Florence Nightingale wing of Baylor hospital, Dallas Texas. He was the third, and last child of Teddy Jean Spain Witten and Farrar Brooks Witten Jr.


Home for his first years was the family farm, Windy Ridge, in Ellis County. Upon reaching school age his family relocated to Dallas where he attended Umphrey Lee Elementary, William H. Atwell Jr. High and David W. Carter Sr. High schools. During this time he gained an enduring love of music, focusing on the Cornet/Trumpet.


He went on to attend East Texas State University where he maintained his musical inclinations, joining Kappa Kappa Psi Band fraternity. However his true calling, and ability, came to the fore. Computer Science. His skills became so well-known and he was so much in demand by the private sector his college career was set aside for employment. Will later finished his degree at the same school, now Texas A&M Commerce, and joked they he didn't realize that his "4 year plan turned into a 34 year plan."


His career in Computer Science finally took him to where his father had always worked, International Business Machines. Will's skill led to a rapid rise within IBM. He became a member of their Disaster Recovery Team which necessitated national and international trips. One of his proudest accomplishments was work IBM did for the national government in Washington after 9/11, which he couldn't speak in detail on.


After retirement he moved back to the family property around Maypearl, Texas, took the mantle of farmer, and devoted his energies to improving the land. Reconnecting with family and friends became a vital part of his life, and he became re-energized. The re-connecting with the community brought him a new start on a life he very much enjoyed. Every part of the property shows his stewardship.


He is survived by Will David Witten II (Son), Lynne Alisse Witten (Sister), F. Brooks Witten III (Brother), Diane Witten (Sister-in-law), Ami Charlotte Smith (Niece), Chris Smith (Nephew-in-law), and Audra Jean Smith (Grand-Niece). Cousins and relatives far too numerous to mention belonging to the Witten, Spain, Wilemon, Dawson, and Howorth families.



In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maypearl First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 246 Maypearl, TX 76064, or the Maypearl Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 10, Maypearl, Texas 76064.

Services to celebrate his life are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church of Maypearl with Dr. Art Torpy officiating. Interment will follow at the Maypearl Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church on Wednesday.
