W.D. Sims, Jr.

W. D. "Dab" Sims, Jr., 90 of Waxahachie, passed away, Monday, January 14, 2013 in Waxahachie. A true Waxahachie native, Dab was born to the late Wilson D. Sims, Sr. and May Rena Sims on December 29, 1922. He was a star athlete in the Waxahachie High School class of 1941. Following high school he attended Tulsa University on an athletic scholarship. Dab joined the United States Navy in 1943, serving in WWII. As a devoted family man he was the perfect father to his two girls and a much beloved grandfather and great grandfather. An avid bird watcher, "Dab's birds" returned to his home year after year. He is survived by his wife, Jean Heffernan Sims of Waxahachie; his daughters Dana Wessels and her husband Jim of Waxahachie, and Lou Ann Burkholder and her husband John of Dallas; his step daughter Dena Amoth and her husband Gary of Irving; his step son Ed Wills and his wife Cheryl of Grandview, MO; his grandchildren, John Rutherford and wife Annella of Franklin, TN, Mark Rutherford and wife Lynn of Coppell, Meredith Burkholder and husband Lucas DaSilva of Lugano, Switzerland; and his great grandchildren, Lily Rutherford, Preston Rutherford, Piper Rutherford. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Ann Shipp Sims; as well as by his sisters, May Evelyn Lasswell and Edith Few. Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Waxahachie City Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Zimmerman officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Nicholas P.
