Mr. Vernon Cornelius (Cotton) Ashton, 87, of Waxahachie, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2007 at his residence.

He was born in Newton, Kansas to Erwin C. and Mabel Marie (Beck) Ashton. He graduated from Gladewater High School in 1938 and from North Texas Teachers College in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a lieutenant in WWII serving in Manilla discharged May of 1946.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Waxahachie, Texas 75165.

He was employed as a Teacher, Coach, and Supervisor of Compensatory Education with TEA (Teachers Education Association) in Austin from 1965 to 1985. Coached football from 1946 to 1965 in Grand Prairie, Corpus Christi, Miller, Head Coach at Carroll High in Corpus Christi, entered into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 1978, member of the Texas High School Coaches Association for 55 years.

Mr. Ashton married Ann L. Lyon on March 25, 1949 in Waxahachie, Texas. She preceded him in death on June 11, 2000.

Mr. Ashton is survived by: nephew, Joe Ashton and wife Karen of Ft. Worth, Texas; nieces, Judy Ashton Daniel and husband Bill, and Jill Ashton all of Roswell, New Mexico; niece, Martha Knox; nephews, Buddy Banks and wife Janice, Bill Pruett and wife Debi, all of Waxahachie, Texas; and nephew Philip Cochran of Austin, Texas; god-daughters, Erin Sandoval and Tyler Leverenz of Waco, Texas.

The family will receive friends and relatives 6-8 PM Tuesday at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
The Celebration of his Life will be 10 AM Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at graveside in the Sardis Cemetery with Pastor Galloway officiating. Interment will follow.

Family request donations to First United Methodist Church, 501 W. Marvin, Waxahachie, Texas 75165.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
