Mr. Sterling Worthy, 78 of Avalon passed away at Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie October 11, 2009. Sterling was born December 29, 1930 to Ivy W. Worthy and Lou Ethel Worthy. His early occupation as a farmer became a life long career. He served his country in the US Army from March 15, 1951 to March 15, 1953 as a Radio Repairman and earned the rank of Corporal.

Sterling Worthy received his Amateur Radio License in 1959 and is a Life Member of the American Radio Relay League, an affiliate of the National Association for Amateur Radio. He was a board member of the Avalon Co-op Gin since February 12, 1964, recently resigning as President upon serving in this position since March of 1993. For 18 years Mr. Worthy served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Avalon Public School and as a long-term President. Also, a charter member and President of the Avalon Lions Club.

Mr. Worthy was highly involved in his community. He was instrumental in organizing the Avalon Water Supply and Sewer Service Corporation and served as the first President of the organization. He volunteered for the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department and he was a member of the Ellis County Farm Bureau.

Preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Ivy Webster Worthy, Jr., Edgar Ray Worthy, and Raymond Smith, sisters: Irene Smith Woodard and Floriene Worthy Grant, and nephew Charles Ivy Shrader and niece Shirley Woodard.

Survived by his wife of 54 years, Tommie Faye (Steele) Worthy, daughters: Sharon Goss and her husband Jeff of Dripping Springs, Shannon Worthy of Waxahachie, and Susan Worthy of Midlothian, grandchildren Jason Sterling Goss of Lubbock, Justin Atwell Goss and his wife Courtney of Wimberley, Jonathon Worthy Goss, Amy Katherine Goss of Dripping Springs, one great-grandchild MaKaela Camille Goss of Wimberley, sister Virginia Worthy Shrader of Avalon, nieces: Linda Shrader McCullough of Ennis, Rae Nell Andrews of Quanah, nephews: Alfred Woodard and his wife Gwen of Graham, Floyd Woodard and wife Byrda of Abilene, and Phillip Smith of Logan, NM. Also survived by numerous in-laws, cousins.

A visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 AM Thursday at the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel, Wayne Boze Funeral Home with the Rev. Grady Cashion and Rev. Larry Poarch officiating. Pallbearers are: James Steele, Neilan Steele, Jason Goss, Justin Goss, Jonathon Goss, Curtis Callaway, David Steele and Greg Steele.
