Sandra "Sam" Hester, lovingly known as Samma, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on April 8, 1952, in Waukon, IA, to James and Helen May (Ewing), Sam was a free spirit who embraced life with a warmth and vibrancy that left a mark on everyone she met.
Sam’s life revolved around her family and her love for animals. She cherished her roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, creating a legacy of love and kindness that will live on through the generations she inspired. Sam is survived by her children: Haley Lauderdale and her husband, Chad Lauderdale; Zachary Zoll and his wife, Geneva Zoll; and Abigail Hagar and her husband, Joey Hagar. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Desiree Branden and her fiancé, Zach Starr; Travion Zoll and his wife, Heather Zoll; Payton Grant and his wife, Zahra Grant; Jordan Grant; Miley Moore; and Brayden Moore. Her great-grandchildren include: Blaire Willow, Weston Starr, and Brayden Grant. Additionally, her brothers, John May and his wife, Jan May, and Jim May, shared countless cherished memories with her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ron May, and her husband, Ron. However, her spirit continues to live on in the hearts of those she loved.
Sam was a woman who danced to the beat of her own drum, a true free spirit with an unmatched zest for life. She shared a profound connection with animals, finding peace and companionship in their presence. Whether it was a family gathering or a quiet moment surrounded by her beloved pets, Sam radiated love and understanding, touching lives in ways words cannot fully capture.
Sam's life was a testament to the power of unconditional love, family bonds, and the simple joys of being present. She taught us to live authentically and to embrace each moment with open arms.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sam’s memory to an animal rescue organization. A local one dear to her heart is New Life Cat Rescue, which continues the work Sam cared about so deeply.
