Born April 26, 1930, in Alton, Kansas. Sally was the daughter of James Orbrey Johnston and Elsie Mabel Peterson Johnston. She passed away peacefully, Friday, October 13, 2023, in Waxahachie, Texas.
Sally grew up with her two brothers, Vincil and Bill, and one sister, Roxie, in Alton, KS.
On May 5, 1946, Sally was united in marriage to Thomas William “Bill” Herndon in Stockton, KS. Five children were born to this union, Rosemary, Michael, Patrick, James, and Shawn. After they married, Sally and Bill lived in Beloit, KS before moving to Dallas, TX in 1953. They were privileged to spend more than 57 years together before Bill’s death in 2004.
Sally loved being a wife, mother, homemaker, and grandma. She was an excellent seamstress and cook. Her family raved over her homemade chicken and noodles on mashed potatoes, pan fried chicken and gravy, a wide variety of pies, and chocolate cinnamon rolls. She enjoyed making her holiday table perfect with linens, fancy dishes, and beautiful center pieces. She took delight in her job as a proofreader before moving back to Glen Elder, KS in 1979. Sally served on the Glen Elder Library Board and volunteered at the Glen Elder Senior Center for many years. Sally was quick-witted with a dry sense of humor, as any who knew her would attest. She didn’t usually officially join family game time but often was heard yelling answers from the kitchen to the Trivia game questions, of which she was never wrong. She enjoyed traveling with Bill, reading, and crocheting.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; brothers, Vincil and Bill; sister, Roxie; three children, Rosemary, Michael, and Patrick.
Sally is survived by her sons, James Herndon and wife, Evelyn, of Waxahachie, TX and Shawn Herndon and wife, Angie, of Glen Elder, KS, many grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends.
