His business career started delivering newspapers to residents in the Love Field area. His next business venture was when he was in high school, he delivered telegrams for Western Union in downtown Dallas on his bicycle. He then became an apprentice at Southwestern Engraving Company while attending high school at Crozier Tech High.

World War II was declared and he quit school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a gunners mate on ship in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in February, 1946. He returned to Dallas and he and two of his former co-workers at S/W Engraving started a new business in the field of etching and they named it Texas Nameplate Company. Roy became sole owner in 1957.
