May 23, 1938 — October 26, 2016

Ronald Dale "Mickey" Garrett was born May 23, 1938 to Elyman Hayes Garrett and Marie Tracy Garrett in Smithville, Texas. He went to school in Smithville and met the love of his life, June Lanelle Burns, in grade school. They married in 1959 just ten days after he returned from the United States Marine Corps. He has been heard joking many times that "the best thing to come out of Smithville, Texas were himself and Highway 71.

Mickey served as a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corp upon graduating high school in June 1957. Upon return and his marriage, Mickey and June set off for college. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Ag Economics in 1963 while June worked for the university. He was the strongest, most proud Fightin' Texas Aggie to ever walk this Earth. Gig Em !!!

He is survived by his lovely wife June who has cared and nurtured him every moment in their marriage. She never left his side throughout each moment of his illness. He is also survived by his daughter, Phyllis Hillegeist, and son-in-law who he began introducing as his son, Mark Hillegeist. He is also survived by grandchildren Justin Hyatt and his younger sister, Rachel Hyatt. Both Justin and Rachel lit up his world the moment they walked in the room and were by his bedside and loved on him until his very last moments. He is also survived by grandchildren Jordan Garrett and Breanne Garrett and step grandchildren Bryce Hill, Madelon Hillegeist and Melissa Hillegeist. He is survived by one of his older brothers, Bill Garrett and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Barry, daughter-in-law, Laurie, his parents and brothers and sisters.

Mickey was a true servant of Christ and loved to help and serve others from an early age. Upon retirement, he began volunteering in his community in many area and was very involved in serving others. Mickey was an active member of First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed serving and helping with Meals on Wheels and was active in the Rotary Club. Mickey especially loved placing American Flags throughout the community with Rotary Club. He was active in the Master Gardeners and loved his activities at the Senior Center as well as donating to the center.

Mickey and June loved to travel in the United States and abroad. He loved camping and later, once retired, he and June loved to travel the United States in their RV. He was very fond of Yellowstone and said a few days before he left this Earth that he was going to go one more time but he would have to wait until he felt better. He loved to play dominoes and loved to cook and grill for his family. He loved the deer lease and loved hunting with his son, Barry, and later his grandson, Justin. He and June both loved gardening and passed that love down to many others. He was so proud of his garden and yard and enjoyed seeing his crop brought in.

Mickey was an animal lover and all animals gravitated to him no matter where he went. His dog, Missy, was a wonderful companion and stuck by his side in his bed while he gave her treats and played fetch during his last hours on Earth.
