Romie Perryman

Romie Gene "R.G." Perryman, a long-time resident of Waxahachie, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013. He was born January 13, 1929 in Milford, Texas and moved with the family to Hope, Arkansas in 1935. He attended public schools there and graduated from Hope High School in 1947. He then moved to Waxahachie, Texas and on April 30, 1948 married Mildred Aday and they remained married 63 years until her death in 2011. He attended Abilene Christian University and graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature. He was awarded a Master of Arts Degree in English Literature from Hardin-Simmons University in 1958, and a Master of Library Science from East Texas State University in 1969. Mr. Perryman was a classroom teacher in the public schools of Texas for 33 years, serving the independent school districts of Raymondville, Dawson, Big Spring, Waxahachie, Maypearl, Milford, and Palmer. He taught many different subjects and also served as librarian for many years. His favorite subject was the plays of William Shakespeare, especially Macbeth, and he introduced many high school students to these classics. After his retirement from public schools, he taught at Cisco College in Abilene for several years. He served in the National Guard for eight years during the 1950's operating an M75 Personnel Carrier and discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He was the minister of the Reagor Springs Church of Christ from 1961 to 1966, and was a member of the College Street Church of Christ for 31 years, serving as a Bible Class teacher during all of that time and serving as an elder for 23 years. He volunteered his time for many, He is survived by one sister, Nelva Collins of Hope, Arkansas, three children, Barry and wife Mary Perryman of Reno, Nevada, Bruce and wife Carlene Perryman of Milford, Texas, and Glenda and husband Michael Burden of Abilene, Texas, six grandchildren, Colette and husband Craig Smith of Lander, Wyoming, Amber and husband Matthew Nelson of Laramie, Wyoming, Catherine Elizabeth Perryman of Milford, Texas, Hailey Burden, Emma Burden, and Madison Burden of Abilene, Texas, one great granddaughter, Rosie Smith of Lander, Wyoming, one brother in law and one sister in law, William Clifford Aday and wife Nell Aday of Bullard, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mildred Aday Perryman, his parents John Madison Perryman and Minnie Chipman Perryman, eight brothers and six sisters. In addition to his extensive work for the church and reading thousands of books, Mr. Perryman also raised cattle and was an avid gardener; giving much of the vegetables he grew to elderly people. He was also a serious coin collector and served as the President of the Waxahachie Coin Club in 1971. Visitation will be Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie. Funeral Services will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Brown Street Church of Christ in Waxahachie. Burial will be in the Waxahachie City Cemetery. All are welcome to attend.
