Robert Edward Lewis died on Thursday, May 18, 2017. He was born on December 25, 1927 in Ranger, Texas, the son of Fred C. and Lorine Meharg Lewis. He was educated in the Waxahachie public schools, Texas A&M College and North Texas State College where he received a B.A. degree in Economics in 1949. He enlisted in the US Army in 1946 and served in the occupation of Korea until 1948. In 1952, he was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company and held various employee relations and administrative management positions in Borger and Orange, Texas, Charlotte, NC, Greenville, SC and Bartlesville, OK, until his retirement in 1985.
Robert and the former Kittie Bess Maylen were married in Bartlesville on November 10, 1952. Following her death in 2002, he returned to Waxahachie where he and the former Gretchen Clift Sammons were married on January 4, 2003. He was a member of the Lions club in Borger, Orange and Charlotte, and past president of the Bartlesville Downtown Lions Club. He had been a member of the Waxahachie Lodge No. 90 AF & AM since 1951. After returning to Waxahachie, he became a member of the Central Presbyterian Church, the Baylor Medical Center Auxiliary for 8 years and an Ellis County Museum volunteer. He served on the boards of the WISD Education Foundation, the Ellis County Museum and the Waxahachie Foundation. He was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, woodworking, playing bridge and co-hosting monthly First Friday luncheons for WHS Class of 1945's members, spouses and friends.
In addition to his widow, Gretchen Lewis, Robert is survived by his daughters, Kelly and son in-law Bruce Monson of Waxahachie and Holly and son in-law Buck Davis of Sand Springs, OK; granddaughters, Page and Charlie Caggiano of Niceville, FL and Caitlin and Brian Doucet of Pflugerville, TX; grandson, Schuyler (Sky) Cunningham of Stillwater, OK; great grandchildren, Tayloe, Vincent and Caroline Caggiano of Niceville, FL and James Doucet of Pflugerville, TX; sister, Catherine and brother in-law Charles Lyon of Waxahachie, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home located at 1826 W. Hwy 287 Business in Waxahachie. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Central Presbyterian Church. Private graveside services will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, OK.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Waxahachie Foundation, American Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice.
