He resumed his studies and earned his BA from Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, Oklahoma and earned his BBA from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. He earned a Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas and continued his education at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri to pursue his Doctor of Divinity Degree.

He served as youth minister at First United Methodist Church of Alvarado, Texas and it was there he decided to pursue ordination in the United Methodist Church. He was ordained a Deacon of the United Methodist Church in 1994 and was ordained an Elder in 1997.

While working toward his seminary degree and serving as a student pastor at Sardis UMC, he met and married Kathleen June Turner on June 23, 1991 at Sardis UMC. Together they served in the following appointments: Sardis/Bethel UMC's, Maypearl/Venus UMC's, St. Luke UMC in Corsicana, Church of Good Shepherd in Arlington, and Bethesda UMC in Weatherford. Offices he held included Weatherford District Registrar, Arlington Urban Ministry committee, Fort Worth Metropolitan Board of Mission committee, and Chair of the Ministerial Associations in Corsicana and Weatherford.
