Mr. Paul Maxwell, affectionately known to his family and loved ones as "Papaw", passed away Saturday evening at his residence. Paul was born in Maypearl, Texas to Lester and Johnnie ( Mitchell ) Maxwell. He married Hattie Jo Hunt November 23rd, 1941 in the Oak Branch Community. Paul joined the US Army in 1942 serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign.. He was honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of Sergeant. He received three Bronze Stars for bravery, two Purple Hearts, a Good Conduct Medal and numerous other ribbons of recognition.
Paul was employed with the Waxahachie Fire Dept. from 1956 to 1982 when he retired as a Lieutenant. While a fireman he worked part-time as a painter/carpenter. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church since 1953 and the Fidelis Sunday School Class since 1973. He was a member of the VFW Post 3894 and an avid gardener and fisherman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Hattie Maxwell of Waxahachie; one daughter Paula Justice and her husband Jimmy; three grandchildren, John Rodgers and his wife Lauri, Kristy Allred and Mick Justice; four great grandchildren; Hollie and Hayden Allread and Abigail and Anna Rodgers, all of Waxahachie. Also surviving are two brothers; Clinton Maxwell of Maypearl, and Bobby Maxwell of Boyce; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Davis of Waxahachie, Mary Ann Sheffield of Austin and Lois Maxwell of Whitney; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Johnnie; three brothers; Mitchell, James, Harold, and one sister Allene Maxwell.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 PM Monday evening at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life will be 3:00 PM Tuesday March 9, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Richard Reed and Waxahachie Fire Department Chaplain, Bruce Zimmerman, officiating. Entombment will follow at the Lakeview Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Dwaine Williams, Larry Evans, John Chenault, Terry Skipper, Randel Muirhead, and Randall Potter. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Willie Noel III, Johnny Johnson, Larry Chenault, and Steve Allred.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Oddesy Health Care.
