Nancy Phillips Saylor
Passed away June 17, 2006. She was born November 29, 1917 in Ft. Mill, SC but raised in Charlotte NC, along with a younger sister and brother. She is the last of her generation. Nancy was very bright. She skipped the 5th grade and gave the graduation address in the 6th grade. She attended Queen's College in Charlotte where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and a member of the May Court all three years she was there. Instead of staying her senior year and becoming May Queen, she married Edwin Neil Saylor on September 4, 1937.
Nancy is survived by her two children, Edwin H. Saylor and his wife Donna of Biloxi, MS., Sharon "Sherry" Saylor Dyess and her husband Bob of Waxahachie, TX; grandchildren, Lindy and Craig Smith of Ocean Springs, MS., Cindy and Jeff Willingham of Rowlett, TX., and Dave May of Austin, TX., Julie Dyess of Dallas, Jon Dyess of Waxahachie, TX., and Robert Dyess of Denver, CO., ; great grandchildren, Hunter and Saylor Ann Smith, Madelyn, Courtney, and Carson May.
Nancy and Ed moved from charlotte to Dallas in 1947. They belonged to Highland Park Presbyterian Church until 1974 when Ed retired. While living in the Park Cities, Nancy taught adult Sunday School, headed the youth group, was a Camp Fire Girls leader, was a member of Charity League and served as president, and belonged to the Rejebian Study Club. Nancy also enjoyed playing Bridge, having been taught by her grandmother when she was 12 years old.
Retirement took Nancy and Ed to Ruidoso, N.M. where they designed and built homes. Nancy had a gift for decorating homes. She enjoyed collecting antiques long before it became popular. When the altitude affected their health, they moved to Manor Park Retirement Center in Midland, TX. They became members of 1st Presbyterian Church. Ed passed away 1 ½ years later. Nancy hosted and taught Circle lessons for several years in her home. She was a gifted teacher. She volunteered in the office at the church for several years.
In 2004, Nancy moved to Waxahachie, TX. to be close to her daughter. She joined Central Presbyterian Church. When able, she attended Manna Bible Study, and hosted parties for the group in her home.
Nancy was kind, thoughtful, intelligent, and always well liked. We will miss her deeply. The family appreciates her helper and friend, Pat Collins, who took such good care of her. Thanks also to Family First Hospice and Dr. John Bousquet III, Bessie Crawford, Faye Robinson, and the EMT crews who were kind so many times.
A memorial service was held at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home at 11 AM Monday, June 19, 2006. She was buried in Midland.
