Zeta Joyce Eskridge
"My candle burns at both ends,
It may not last the night,
But, oh my foes and
Oh my friends,
It gives a lovely light"
As in Joyce's favorite verse, her light ceased to burn on October 9th, 2005 after a 10 month long battle with lung cancer. She was born May 28th, 1933 in the home of her deceased parents, Claude and Zetta Eskridge. Her only brother, Cloyce, preceded her in death in June of 1993.
She is survived by her loving sister, Janice, a nephew, Marshall Eskridge, and nieces Claudia Eskridge Morgan and Karen Eskridge Foster. There are six great nephews and one great niece.
After graduating from Waxahachie High School, Joyce was employed for 32 years with the Waxahachie Bank & Trust Company. From an entry level beginning as file clerk she advanced over the years to bookkeeper, secretary, cashier, Executive Vice-President, loan officer, Trust Officer, and member of the Board of Directors. During her years with the bank, she attended many specialized courses in her field. In 1983, after retiring from the bank, she attended for a year and graduated from the National Association of Legal Assistants earning the title of Certified Legal Assistant. For the next 10 years she was employed by Jim Pitts, Attorney and the Jenkins & Jenkins law firm, the began to work as a freelance legal assistant until full retirement in 1994.
During her career, she was involved in many civic and cultural projects and organizations. She was the first woman to hold an elective bank officer, the first woman to be a Director of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, an original and long term Trustee of the Waxahachie Foundation, member of the Waxahachie Sub-Standard Housing Commission and a life member of the N.A.A.C.P.
Her body will lie in state at her home, 119 Ocotillo Drive, from 5 to 7PM on Monday, October 10, 2005 and there will follow, at that location, a private, invitation only, service.
