Mildred "Mickey" Ruth Sims April 08, 1922 April 04, 2011 Mickey was born April 08, 1922 at home in the Boz-Bethel community. Mickey and her two brothers Jack and Bill Sims attended Waxahachie schools. At age 13 the family moved to 605 E. Marvin which was a family owned home by her grandparents. Mickey graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1940, she then attended Trinity University 1941-42 while it was still in Waxahachie. During the war, Mickey worked at North American Aviation as a Spectrograph operator. In 1944, she returned to Trinity University in San Antonio and graduated with a BS Degree in Physical Education. In the summers of 1944 and 1945 she was a girl's camp counselor at YMCA and taught swimming. After graduation, she worked for YMCA as Assistant Director where she taught swimming, games of all kinds including bowling and volleyball. In 1947 she attended Texas Women's University, then known as TSCW and studied to obtain a teaching certificate which she received in 1948. Thus began her long career teaching in various independent public school systems. Waxahachie High School, Physical Education 1947-1950, she coached basketball, volleyball, softball and was sponsor of cheerleaders and pep squad. She coached volleyball at McAllen High School in 1951. She coached at Refugio High School from 1953-1958 where her team became regional winners also sponsored cheerleader squad and was Junior Class Sponsor. She then went to North Forrest School District (Houston) from 1958-1962 Smiley High School PE, Coached inter mural teams, sponsored cheerleaders and received "Teacher of the Year" award in 1962. Attended Sam Houston State College to earn Masters Degree and Counselor Certificate. She was at North Forrest Junior High School Counselor from 1963-1966, Houston ISD Waltrip High School C.V.A.E. teacher from 1967-1969. Rogers Jr. High, HISD, Counselor 1970-1978, Sponsor of Student Council. In 1978 she retired from Houston School District and returned to Waxahachie to live in her family home. Mickey traveled to Europe, Ireland, Hawaii, and Caribbean Cruise with long time friend, Mary Collins. Mickey loved to garden, enjoyed photography and playing golf. In her later years she volunteered for numerous non-profit agencies including meals on wheels. She became a Master Gardener in 2001. She stayed active playing dominoes, cross word puzzles and gardening with friends at the Sterling House and Buffalo Creek Assisted Living. The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Buffalo Creek, Infinate Care, Family First Hospice for their tender care of Mickey. Mickey was a devoted member of St. Joseph Church, active in The Altar Society and President of the Jet Set Group. She is survived by her sister in law: Adriene Sims of Garland, Texas; Cousins: Jane and Bill Veazey of Oklahoma City, OK; Cynthia Pullin of Norman, OK., Marijane Veazey of Oklahoma City, OK, Stephanie Veazey of Oklahoma City, OK, Debra Lankenau of Carrollton, TX, Bill Veazey, Jr. of Oklahoma City, OK., Mark Talkington of Dallas, Clark Talkington of Washington, DC, and Janelle Talkington. Mickey loved her family and friends. Visitation with the family is scheduled from 6-8PM Tuesday, April 05, 2011 at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home, Rosary will be at 7pm Tuesday at the funeral home. A Mass Of Christian burial will be at 9:30 AM Wednesday, April 06, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park in Waxahachie. In lieu of flowers make donations to: St. Joseph Altar Society 512 East Marvin Ave. Waxahachie, Texas 75165.
