Michael Gilbert Barreras, 67, of Ennis, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Medical City Dallas.
Mike, also known as “Poppy” to his family, was born in Belen, NM on February 10, 1954 to Gilbert and Rachel Barreras. He moved to Ft. Worth, TX as a teenager and later, Palmer, TX, until building his dream home on Sugar Ridge Rd. in Ennis 20 years ago. Mike spent most of his adult life as a business owner in the automotive industry. He was the owner of Corvette City in Dallas for 10 years, and then Texas Custom Trucks for 23 years, prior to retiring in 2019. He and his wife of 42 years, Denise, enjoyed travel, extraordinary food, and living life in the absolute fullest and most unparalleled ways. Mike had a passion for drag racing, and spent countless hours testing, tuning, and then “sending it.” He enjoyed sharing this love with his son and grandson and cherished the lifelong friendships that began at the racetrack. To no surprise, he recently discovered the ATV park was quite an exciting place to be. In true Poppy fashion, he found the best ride the ATV world had to offer, bought it, and could not wait to get it muddy. Again, forming incredible new friendships along the way. Among all the other ventures, his lifelong love of horses fueled his desire to help his granddaughter pursue her barrel racing dreams, and he cherished his time spent as the rodeo “hauler.”
Mike “Poppy” was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert and brother, Steven; He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Denise (Zabojnik) Barreras; mother, Rachel Bobo, and husband, Roy; daughter, Brandi Farmer, her husband, Jerry, and their children, Hunter, Hayven, and Jordyn; son, Steven Barreras, his wife, Amanda, and their child, Addison; sister, Tami Martinez, and wife, Gina; brother, Ricky Barreras, and wife, Christy; sister, Brenda Barreras; brother, Jeff Barreras, and wife, Dina; sister, Michelle Barreras; daughter, Brandi Mesker, and her children, Courtney, Kennedy, and Colby; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
