Mary Presley Winn

Mary Presley Winn went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday evening, November 10, 2008.
Mary was born on June 17, 1923 in Plum Grove, Texas to Nancy Elizabeth Landrum and Ed Presley. She grew up in the Plum Grove community, attended Plum Grove Elementary School and graduated from Milford High School. She married Griggs Winston Winn on November 14, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona. Mary and Winston would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this Friday, the 14th.
Mary began working for the City of Waxahachie in 1962 as a clerk in the Finance Department. She worked her way to the height of her profession as Director of Finance for the City of Waxahachie. In a time not so partial to women's careers, this accomplishment is quite extraordinary. Mary was named Outstanding Boss of the Year by the OEA program at Waxahachie High School. She was also honored as Outstanding Club Woman of the Year by the Waxahachie Business Women's Luncheon Club. She retired as Director of Finance in 1991 among a group of devoted colleagues. The 29 years Mary worked for the City of Waxahachie were characterized by a superior work ethic and unmatched loyalty. She was beloved by her supervisors and her many co-workers and employees.
Mary loved Jesus and walked with Him every day of her life. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior when she was a young girl. She was baptized in the creek near the family homestead in Plum Grove. Mary was a dedicated believer. She was a member of Farley Street Baptist Church for many years in Waxahachie. She moved back to Maypearl in 1964 and became a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Maypearl. Mary faithfully served FBC Maypearl in many capacities, including volunteer financial secretary for the church, preschool and nursery worker, volunteer office assistant, Sunday School attendance secretary, and many other functions. She was always the first to volunteer, and she served with a vivacious spirit and joy. Mary was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Quilting Club. Her dedication to serve and help those in need is well known throughout her church and community.
Family was the cornerstone of Mary's life. She loved her brothers and sisters and her nieces and nephews. The Presley Family was a huge part of her life, and she treasured their times together in Plum Grove and beyond. Mary's husband, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of her world. She would have given her life to ensure their happiness. She prayed scripture over them daily and was a dedicated "MeMaw" to them all.
Mary enjoyed quilting with her friends and being with her family. She created beautiful quilt pieces for her family to enjoy for many generations to come. She was the happiest when her family was all together at her house for the Holidays. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her loved ones. Mary had a shy, meek presence, but inside her was the heart of a lion. She was a strong, smart, confident woman who cared for her family and was devoted to her friends. Mary loved the Lord and knew Him well, evidence by her precious, tattered and torn Bible, which chronicled her life's many trials and blessings. Mary lived a life worthy to be told, "Well done, good and faithful
servant". She heard those words Monday evening as she entered into the presence of Christ himself. Mary Presley Winn "MeMaw" will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but we rejoice knowing she is safe and healthy in the arms of her Jesus, celebrating today with her loved ones in Heaven.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Nancy Elizabeth "Bessie" and Ed Presley, her brothers and sisters, Carl, Linda, Rogers, Pearl, Lois, Jack, Violet, Thomas, Edith and her husband of 65 years, Winston.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kay and Lee Covington; son and daughter-in-law Tommy and Susan Winn. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, David Splawn and wife Cynthia, Kathy Splawn, Nicole Covington Bowman and husband Jimi, Misti Winn Harriss and husband Robin, Wess Griggs Winn and wife Elizabeth, and Emilie Winn McDowell and husband Chris. She leaves behind a cherished legacy of six great - grandchildren, Nicholas Splawn, Winn Harriss, BG Winn, Belle Winn, Audrey Winn, and Lily McDowell.
Pallbearers will be Mary's nephews: Tommy Gene Presley, Don Terry, Nathan Presley, Ronnie Presley, Jerry Presley, Terry Presley, Jerry Pat Briles, Kurt Briles, Eddie Frank Presley, and Randy Wagonseller. Honorary pallbearers are Mary's special friends and loved ones at First Baptist Church in Maypearl.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, November 14th at 1:00 in the Sanctuary at First Baptist Church in Maypearl. Mary will be laid to rest immediately following the service at the Maypearl Cemetery.
