Mary Alice Presswood Owens of Waxahachie, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2017. She was born on August 11, 1928 to Loyd and Lucy Presswood in DeKalb, Texas.
Mary Alice graduated from high school in Commerce, Texas in 1945 and graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in 1949. Mary Alice met Jesse Roy Owens when she called to invite him to a church social. They married June 18, 1949, joined Farley Street Baptist Church June 19, 1949 and made their home in Waxahachie. Mary Alice served alongside Jesse at the church as long as they were able. Jesse and Mary Alice were always active in anything their sons and grandchildren were doing. Mary Alice taught Physical Education at Waxahachie High School for 5 years and Turner Middle School for 14 years. She sponsored the cheerleaders at the high school and always enjoyed having former students say hello when they saw her out and about. One of her former students (Leigh Ann Dorsey McClure) recalled when she asked Mary Alice if she could teach band students about football. Mary Alice taught them the details of the game. The student said, "She taught me so much about life . . . and football."
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Jesse Roy Owens; parents, Loyd and Lucy Presswood; brothers and sisters-in-law Kelley and Mary Presswood; Clarence and Sue Presswood; J.C. and Sybil Presswood; Marion and Lyvonne Presswood; and sisters and brothers-in-law Louise and Bernard Finley; Evelyn and Cotton Martin; and Lois Ruth and Ray Roberts. Mary Alice was the last of eight children.
She is survived by 3 sons and daughters-in-law: Bruce and Robbie Owens of Corpus Christi; Jim and Joyce Owens of Waxahachie; and Randy and Liz Owens of Waxahachie; brother and sister-in-law Ken and Katherine Owens; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services to celebrate her life are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Farley Street Baptist Church with Brother Richard Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park, Waxahachie.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The family will also be receiving friends for some additional time of visitation prior to the service on Thursday in the atrium at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Farley Street Baptist Church Building Fund, 1116 Brown Street, Waxahachie, TX 75165.
