Mary Frances Byrum McCoy, age 90, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on December 22, 2009, from complications of a stroke she had suffered earlier this month. She was born on April 24, 1919, in Howard, Texas, to John W. and Mamie (Dykes) Byrum. She moved to Waxahachie with her family at an early age.
Mary attended Waxahachie schools and graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1936. After high school, she entered Baylor University Hospital School of Nursing, from which she graduated in 1940 as a registered nurse. She was employed at North American Aircraft during World War II and then worked at Chance Vought for seven years. In 1959 she joined Southland Life Insurance Company as their company nurse and worked there until her retirement in 1987. During her years with Southland Life, she treated many of Southland's employees, several of whom became her friends for life.
During Mary's career, she held several different types of positions in nursing (private duty, office setting, & hospital), but none were more important than being our family nurse. Whenever anyone in the family got sick or had a medical question, we always called Mary first.
When Mary wasn't working, she enjoyed going to the family farm outside of Hico, Texas, with her husband, Bill, and tending to their cows, all of which were just like pets to both of them.
Mary's love for animals was immeasurable. It didn't make any difference whether they were her own pets, strays, or wild animals that came up in her back yard, she loved them all. After retirement, her daily schedule was built around the care and feeding of her animals.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; husband Bill McCoy on December 27, 2000; daughter Diane Clayton on November 20, 1995; and sister Mildred Matthews. She is survived by her son, James Larry Clayton (Sheri) of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren - Jason Clayton of Dallas, Texas, and Jamie Vaughan (Mark) of Midlothian, Texas; two great grandchildren - Makayla and Landon Vaughan; sister - Betty Jean White of Waxahachie, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and her many friends at Southland Life.
Services will be held on Sunday, December 27th, at 2:30 pm in the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Gary Hutton, Larry White, Mike Kelley, Kris Kelley, Richard Kim Huffstetler and Jason Clayton
Visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home prior to the service on the 27th beginning at 1:30 pm. Burial will follow at the Waxahachie City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local SPCA.
