Mary Jean was born in Dumphries, Iowa on April 29, 1931 to Donald and Dorothy (Ellerbeck) Rains. At a young age her parents introduced her and her brother “Swede” to music. During her high school years at Abraham Lincoln the brother/sister duo played woodwinds in a local swing band, performing in dance halls around Southwest Iowa. Jean married Ronald Martin Boll in 1957 and built a life in Council Bluffs with their two children, Joe and Jill. After Ron passed away in 1981, Jean married Dr. William Lipscomb. This is when her love of water developed. Bill and Jean joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Omaha, Nebraska where they patrolled the Missouri River, Lake Manawa and surrounding lakes. Bill accepted a position at Coastal Georgia Community College in Brunswick, Georgia in 1988. They joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Brunswick and patrolled the waterways of Southern Georgia. They also sailed their own catamaran boat up and down the Atlantic and Gulf Coast. It was on the beaches of Brunswick, Bill and Jean cultivated their love for landscape and wildlife painting and bird watching. After Bill’s passing in 2005, Jean moved to Waxahachie, Texas in the winters and Papillion, Nebraska in the summers to be close to her children and grandchildren. Jean was a great cook and enjoyed Sunday meal time with her family. She attended many, many activities of her grandkids’ busy lives and continued with her landscape painting and bird watching. As per Jean’s and Bill’s wishes, they will be scattered at sea near Brunswick, Georgia.
