In 1942, she took a teaching position in Harlingen, where she met Ray Husted. They married two months later in June of 1942 and spent their honeymoon in Monterrey, Mexico. Ray and Mary Lee were married for 35 years. After the war, they moved back to Waxahachie where they raised their 3 daughters and 1 son.

Mary Lee was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church and founding member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, later attending the Builder's Class with her daughters. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, the Century Club and Opti-Mrs. Club. She took up painting in oils and watercolors in her sixties and enjoyed taking art lessons at the Ellis County Art Museum. Her life was dedicated to her family and grandchildren. Mary Lee was the ultimate sports and activites supporter for all her grandchildren.
