Marion Oates

Marion Bradford Oates, 87, lost his life to bladder cancer on Wednesday, October 25th at Legends Oaks HealthCare in Waxahachie, Texas.

He was born to Nathan and Bernadine Oates on May 20th, 1930, in Seagrave, Texas. He attended Waxahachie schools and was a pitcher for the American Legion Baseball Team under Coach Hal Curry.

He married Johnnie Ruth Stanton on September 24th, 1949. They became members of Farley Street Baptist Church and had two daughters. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this year.

He was a sign painter for the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Dallas for 38 years. He also painted signs for his many faithful customers in and around Ellis County for many years.

Marion was a fan of the Texas Rangers, the Mavs and the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed owning race horses in his earlier years and later enjoyed watching the horseraces on TV.

He is survived by his wife, Johnnie and daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Joe Smithwick, of Waxahachie, Texas, his two sisters Nelda Trewin of Waxahachie and Joyce Mayfield of San Antonio. Also by seven grandchildren; Brad Dyess (Dana), Tres Medlock (Jen), Corey Sanchez (Julie), Jon Cody Sanchez (Brandi), Ami Horner (Kirby), Joe Smithwick Jr (Beverley) and Morgan Smithwick; eighteen great-grandchildren; Bailey, Tyler, Cash, Charlea, Vivienne, Annabelle, Taylor, Morgan, Gracie, Caitlyn, Harper, Karson, Emily, Mallory, Maggie, Jay, Ava and Zane; two great great grandchildren Addy and Brayden. Survivors also include numerous nieces and nephews, which include his best girls "Cookie" and "Bob". (Sherran Alexander and Barbara Beasley)

He is preceded in death by his daughter Susan Oates Dyess, his parents, his four sisters and three brothers.

Pallbearers are Brad Dyess, Tres Medlock, Corey Sanchez, Jon Cody Sanchez, Bailey Medlock and Todd Alexander.

Honorary pallbearers are Ron Appleton, Hoyt Alexander, Sylvan Beasley, JD Stanton, Joe Smithwick Sr. and Bobby Westbrook.

Visitation with the family will be on Friday October 27th, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, October 28th at 10:00 AM at the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of Wayne Boze Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sardis Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie.
