Margaret Morris

August 15, 1911 — November 14, 2010

Margaret Calvin Morris August 15, 1911 November 14, 2010 Margaret Calvin Morris passed away peacefully early today in San Antonio, Texas, at age 99. Born 15 August 1911 in Waxahachie, Texas, she was a lifelong resident of the city before moving 10 years ago to San Antonio. The daughter of James C. Calvin and Maldanetta Wright Calvin and granddaughter of early Ellis County pioneers Luther and Sallie Miller Calvin and James and Ledorah Wright, Margaret attended Ferris Ward and Marvin Elementary schools prior to entering high school in Waxahachie in 1925. Margaret attended college at Trinity University which was located at that time in Waxahachie. She began teaching school at the age of 19 after one year of college and continued until her marriage in 1934 to the love of her life, Tom C. Morris. They have been married 76 years. During World War II, like many other women, Margaret was left to care for a home and new baby while her husband fought in the war. During this time she not only cared for her home, she negotiated the purchase of a farm, travelling to Seguin to arrange financing for the purchase. Part of the care of her home life included the loving care she gave to members of her extended family. She spent more than fifty years providing care for others, often taking them into the Morris home and unselfish caring for them for many years. Margaret has been a member of the First Methodist Church of Waxahachie since 1915 where she was listed on their "Cradle Role." A member of the Fellowship Class for 31 years, Margaret served as secretary and treasurer for the class for 30 years until moving to San Antonio. During her years in Waxahachie, Margaret has been an active and loyal member of several other community groups. She was a charter member of a bridge club which was started in 1941 and continued for over 50 years. She is even today remembered with love by the surviving members of the club. She has also been active in the Gingerbread Tour, opening their home for tours in 1976 and serving as a hostess in other years. Margaret is remembered lovingly by her extended family as a woman who always had time for others and for whom the kitchen was the center of her home. One in which others were always made to feel welcome. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Calvin Brooks, of Austin, Texas. She is survived by her husband Tom C. Morris, her son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Lucy Jim Morris, grandchildren, Marsha Morris and Jane and husband Joseph Weeden, and great grandchild, Joshua Morris Weeden, all of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by a cousin Mary Helen Campa of Waxahachie and a nephew, William Meeks of St., Louis Missouri, two nieces, Elizabeth Ann and Jack McCormick of Bastrop, Texas, and Margaret and husband Lewis Gibbs of New Orleans, Louisiana, and several great nieces and nephews.
