April 3, 2009

Margaret L. Felty, 92, long time resident of Waxahachie passed away peacefully at her home Friday, April 3, 2009. She shall be fondly remembered for her many contributions to her community. She was born to Lanis Leslie and Margaret Eudell Rowland on August 20, 1916 in Paris, Texas.

She married L T Felty on April 17, 1936 in Angleton, Texas. He was her loving husband for 59 years, preceding her in death in 1996.

Mrs. Felty received her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Texas Christian University and her Masters degree in History from the University of Texas in Arlington. She taught first grade at Northside Elementary in Waxahachie for many years. She is remembered for her passion for teaching and the care and attention she gave to all of her students and her loving focus on the children that needed a little extra attention.

Following her retirement from W.I.S.D. Mrs. Felty was very active in the community and served as past Chairman for fourteen years and current member of the Ellis County Historical Commission and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ellis County Retired School Personnel, Friday Book Club, Ellis County Genealogical Society, Past President of Alpha Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and Past President of the Century Club and a founding member of the Mother's Club as well as many other community and non-profit organizations.

In 2002, Mrs. Felty was chosen First Lady of Waxahachie and was honored with the Outstanding Elementary Educator's award by the Waxahachie Ex-Students Association in 2006.

In September, 2008, Waxahachie's newest elementary school was dedicated and named Margaret L. Felty Elementary School in her honor. The students at Felty Elementary enjoy a rich and safe learning environment and have excelled at many levels. Many of the teachers and faculty of Felty Elementary were some of Mrs. Felty's favorite students themselves.

Mrs. Felty was known to her family and many people in Waxahachie as "Mama T." She was always there for her immediate and extended family with a positive attitude and a good word, no matter what the situation. She always had a way of making people feel special.
