Lois Valera (Underwood) Curry was born on December 12, 1916, to J. B. (Bart) and Dellie (Bearden) Underwood. She attended school at Boz and later transferred to Waxahachie. She graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1935, and was married to Oscar Curry on December 22, 1935. They lived in the Bethel Community. She worked at Dallas Butane Company in Waxahachie, and later worked as bookkeeper at Five Points Gin. Her greatest achievement was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a life long member of Bethel United Methodist Church and served as secretary for many years.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Valera and David Abright of DeSoto; four granddaughters, Ginger Smith and husband Carl; Gaylynn Hester and husband John, both of Midlothian, Denise Wilson and husband Justin, of Waxahachie, Cynthia VanDerLeden and husband Hans, of Mesquite; one sister, Oleta Bridges and husband Roy of Quitman; two brothers, James Underwood and wife Billie, J. B. Underwood, JR. and wife Wilma, both of Waxahachie; two sisters-in-law, Mattie Lou McElroy and husband Pat of Waxahachie and Bettie Austin of Bardwell. She has eight great grandchildren, Lauren Hale, Haley, Hannah and Holton Hester, Noah Smith, Lindsey, Josh and Ryan Wilson, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, in 1998; also her mother and father, one brother, Robert Underwood, and one sister, Ruby Cockerham and husband Boaz, one brother and sister-in-law, James and Dorothey Jean Curry, one brother-in-law, C. R. Dial; and two nephews, Craig Curry and Mark Underwood.
For the past few years she has been living at Grace Presbyterian Village in Dallas, and the family would like to express their gratitude to the friends and staff there for their love and support, and especially those in Camellia Wing and Anderson I.
The family will receive friends and relatives 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life will be 1:30 PM Thursday, February 5, 2004 at the Bethel United Methodist Church with Reverend Marvin Mott officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park. Pallbearers will be Carl Smith, John Hester, Justin Wilson, Hans VanDerLeden, Dennis Cockerham, J. B. Sims, Rick Beer and Mark Hunter.
The family will be available for visitation in the Bethel Fellowship Hall prior to service time.
Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church or Grace Presbyterian Village.
