LaVerne Marie Recktenwald graduated to glory from Trinity Mission Health & Rehab in Italy, TX, on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the age of 91. LaVerne was born Nov. 30, 1921, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, to Emily Nelles Richter and Nicholas John Richter. Laverne attended schools in St. Cloud, graduating in 1939. She met the love of her life, Quentin Joseph Recktenwald, and they were married Dec. 15, 1945, in St. Cloud. Quentin was in the U.S. Army when they married, and they traveled extensively during his 22-year career. They retired from the Army in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1962. They became season ticket holders for the University of New Mexico Lobo basketball team, and attended all the home games at "The Pitt" on the university campus in Albuquerque till Quentin's death in May 1993. In 2001, LaVerne moved to Waxahachie, TX, to be near her son & daughter-in-law, and continued to follow the Lobo basketball team after her move to Waxahachie. LaVerne loved to sew pillowcase dolls and donated them to the craft room of First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie's Lord's Acre for several years. LaVerne is survived by her son, Bruce Recktenwald (Marcia), Waxahachie, TX; her daughter, Judy Pierce (Tom), Akron, Iowa; grandchildren Michael Bocian (Melissa), S. Sioux City, SD; Kaydee (Recktenwald) Casselman, Hallsville, TX; Ellen Keller (Phil), Mercersburg, PA; Rebecca Dickson (Matt), Burkburnett, TX; 8 great-grandchildren: Sage, Hannah & Chase Bocian & Nate Sydow, all of S. Sioux City, SD; Daxton & Connor Casselman, Hallsville, TX; Lyric Dagenhart, Mercersburg, PA; & Jerry Wm. Dickson, Burkburnett, TX; sisters Phyllis Chambers of California & Joan Plombon of Washington; and sister-in-law Dorothy Recktenwald of Minnesota. LaVerne was pre-deceased by her 2-day-old daughter, Robin Elizabeth, her husband, her parents, and brothers-in-law, Jack Recktenwald & Bob Recktenwald. The family would like to thank Dr. John Compton & staff, Dr. Douglas Orr & staff of TX Oncology, the staff at Sterling House of Waxahachie, Baylor Medical Center of Waxahachie, and the staff at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab of Italy, TX, for their care & love for LaVerne. A memorial service to celebrate her life is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013, at the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of Wayne Boze Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at DFW National Cemetery.
