Elvid John Woolley, age 87
March 17, 1918
February 18, 2006
John Woolley, age 87, passed February 18, 2006, at his home in Waxahachie, Texas after spending his final days with his family and friends. John was born March 17, 1918, in Nome, Texas to Ida and John R. Woolley. At age 14, he joined the Methodist Church in South Bend, Texas, accepting the Lord as his savior. Later, John and his parents moved to Dallas where, during the 1936 Texas Centennial, he worked with Admiral Richard E. Byrd and the sled dogs who had accompanied Admiral Byrd on his historic trip to the North Pole. On March 1, 1941, John married Edna Frankum of Glen Flora, Texas. John and Edna made Dallas their home until 1950, when they moved to Sardis, Texas. While living in Sardis, John and Edna joined Sardis Methodist Church and started their family with the births of their son and daughter. While living in Dallas, John learned the paint and body business and after moving to Sardis, joined Dick Hipp Buick in Waxahachie. In the mid 1950's he started his own paint and body business, known as "John's Paint & Body". John was interested in politics and held the position of Republican County Chairman for Ellis County from the mid 1950's through the mid 1960's, attending several Republican National Conventions as a delegate. In 1959 John moved his family to Waxahachie to the home on Rogers Street where he lived the rest of his life. John was known for his dedication to detail in his automobile painting and repairs and in 1970, he was hired to manage the body shop at Carlisle Chevrolet. He continued the operation of "John's Paint & Body" and his other business of buying and selling real property in and around Waxahachie. Following his retirement in 1983, John spent his time at the family lake house at Cedar Creek Lake, traveling with Edna and pursuing his new hobby of oil painting in which he became interested after taking lessons from the late Dr. Julius Zsohar. John was a Mason for 59 years, being first a member of the Buckner Masonic Lodge of Dallas and later the Waxahachie Masonic Lodge. John served his country during World War II, from 1943 to 1946, as a U.S. Navy Seabee, serving in England and France. Overshadowing all other accomplishments, John Woolley was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Edna Woolley; his son and daughter and their spouses, Byron and Cindy Woolley of Dallas and Lila and Greg Fussell of DeSoto; his grandchildren, Amber Fussell and Michael Woolley; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and numerous friends. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to either Sardis United Methodist Church c/o Revered Rod Corder, 645 Sardis Rd., Midlothian, Texas 76065; or, to the Masonic Home and School of Texas, Scholarship and Widows Fund, P. O. Box 15040, Ft. Worth, Texas 76119.
