John Edward Sikes, beloved by all who were fortunate to know him, passed away on Friday, April 27 in Dallas, TX. John was born on September 15, 1940, in Gunnison, Colorado. John was a 1959 graduate of Wilmer Hutchins High School, where he was a member of the mens Varsity football, baskeball and tennis teams. Upon graduation he attended Arlington State College (now University of Texas Arlington). The first day of college, he met the love of his life Glenda Aycock, and they married June 23, 1962. John entered the U.S. Army in 1963 and served his country for 2 years. While in the military, he was commissioned to design the desk on which President Lyndon Johnsons metals were displayed. After the military, John worked for Varo for 26 years as a Manufacturing Engineer and was extremely proud of his involvement in the sidewinder missile launcher for the F-4, F-14, F-16, and F-18 as well as the first generation for military's night vision goggles; he was then employed as a City Inspector for the City of Waxahachie for 9 years. He is preceded in death by Alma Els Sikes (Mother); Otis Edison Sikes (Father); June Sain (Sister); Erna Els (dear Aunt). John is survived by his wife of almost 50 years Glenda of Waxahachie, TX; Daughter, Susan Johnson and husband Quinn of Rockwall TX; and daughter Holly Autorina and husband Nick of Woodstock, GA; Grandsons, Grant and Lance Johnson of Rockwall, Texas; brothers Dean Garcia of Valley Center, CA and Eddie Sikes of Dallas, TX. John also leaves behind many nieces and nephews including David Aycock of Red Oak, Texas who was like a son to John; as well as many friends and extended family who will miss him dearly. John always put God first and was a faithful member of the Brown Street Church of Christ. He was known for his love of God and singing. He led singing for several congregations for many years. John was many things to many people; Husband, Daddy, PawPaw, Coach, Golf Buddy, Fishing Buddy, playing Santa Clause, history buff, shade tree mechanic road trip warrior and a Texas sports fan. He invested all of his time and resources in his family and friends. He loved spending time with his beloved grandsons and sharing many travel adventures with them - the mountains of Colorado held a special place in Johns heart. Johns remains an inspiration to all that were blessed to know him. Services to celebrate his life are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the Brown Street Church of Christ with Dean Kilmer officiating. Interment will follow at the Merit Cemetery, Merit, Texas. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2012 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home, Waxahachie. Donations may be made to Boles Orphans Home or the Brown Street Church of Christ Building Fund.
