Jesse Owens

Jesse Roy Owens of Waxahachie, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2016. He was born on July 25, 1929 to Foy and Altha Lee Owens in Rice, Texas.
Jesse met Mary Alice Presswood when she called to invite him to a church social. They married June 18, 1949, made their home in Waxahachie and joined Farley Street Baptist Church July 19, 1949. Jesse was ordained a deacon at Farley Street Baptist Church March 1, 1959 and continued to serve as a deacon and in various capacities at the church as long as he was able.
Jesse worked at various jobs from delivery driver, to insurance salesman to cement dispatcher at TXI. He worked hard to support his family but was never too busy for any activities in which his sons and grandchildren participated. Jesse and his uncle, B W Owens, made a huge impact on Waxahachie Youth Baseball having coached for many years and imparting the knowledge and skills they acquired while playing semi-pro baseball. Jesse and Mary Alice traveled the US to watch their sons play football and baseball and to watch granddaughters play college basketball and volleyball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Foy and Altha Lee Owens.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Alice; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Robbie Owens of Corpus Christi, Jim and Joyce Owens of Waxahachie and Randy and Liz Owens of Waxahachie; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Katherine Owens of Dallas; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services to celebrate his life are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Farley Street Baptist Church with Brother Richard Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park, Waxahachie.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The family will also be receiving friends at the church for some additional time of visitation prior to the service on Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Farley Street Baptist Church Building Fund, 1116 Brown Street, Waxahachie, TX 75165.
