In the early morning of September 21, 2009 Jeanette Mae Vasut Hollub lost her struggle with pancreatic cancer at her son's home with her family by her side.
Jeanette was born on November 20, 1927 in Schulenburg, TX and attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and then graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1945. She attended the University of Houston Junior College and earned an Associate Degree in Nursing May 1947. While she was there her compassion and care for those injured and killed in the Texas City Disaster on April 16, 1947 shone through the tragdey of the disaster where she cared for many. She went on to become a registered nurse through St. Joseph's School of Nursing in May of 1948.
Jeanette married Alexander A. Hollub on August 29, 1948 and moved to Bastrop, TX and then to Austin, TX where she worked at St. David's Hospital. While at St. David's she was involved in the care of various members from the Texas State Legislature including President Lyndon B. Johnson whom Jeanette nursed back to health.
Jeanette later moved to Poteet, TX in the early 1950's where she lived and raised her son Alex. She helped run a family business: Poteet Pharmacy. In 2004 she moved back to her hometown of Schulenburg where she lived at the Regency Villa Retirement Center. There she stayed involved with many events and made lots of friends. One very special friend and companion was Harvey Fehrenkamp who provided great inspiration to Jeanette.
Jeanette's joy of life is reflected by her creative and outgoing personality. She designed and sewed many of her own clothes, and she also enjoyed designing and decorating her home. Her creative skills in cooking lead to her winning several locally sponsored cooking contests in San Antonio, TX. Her compassion for others was reflected in the joy of visiting those in the Schulenburg and Poteet nursing homes to lend a gentle touch or healing smile to residents there. Her outgoing and vibrant personality will be missed by her family and friends whom she touched with her outgoing and vibrant nature.
She is preceded in death by her parents Joseph Vasut and Adela "Della" Dobrava Vasut. Survivors are her son Alex Hollub and daughter-in-law Ann Hollub of Midlothian, brother Joseph Vasut and sister-in-law Billy Jane Vasut of Nashville, three grandchildren: Laura Oliver, Kevin Hollub, and Tiffany Hollub.
A Celebration of Life will be at 6:00 PM Wed. Sept. 23, 2009 at the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel, Wayne Boze Funeral Home with a visitation to follow. A rosary will be 7:00 PM Thursday at the Schwenke-Baumgarter Funeral Home in Schulenburg. A funeral mass will be 10:00 AM Friday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg.
