Jane Hagler of Waxahachie, Texas, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Sunday, September 25, 2016, after a brief illness. She is remembered by her children, DeeAnn Hagler Sagar of Toronto, Canada, Benton and Ladonna Hagler of Waxahachie, Texas, and Robert (Bob) and Carrie Hagler of Allen, Texas. Her loving grandchildren Amye Sagar, Hannah and Hank Hagler. She also loved her many nieces and nephews in Texas and in Arkansas.
Jane was born Edna Jane Walker in Forrest City, Arkansas on April 24, 1927 to Sidney and Mattie Pearl Walker, and she had younger sister, Myra. She graduated from Texas Women's University with a degree in Mathematics, becoming the first in her family to get a university degree. Jane taught high school mathematics and coached for several years in Arkansas, before deciding that was not her calling. She then worked in Operations for Delta Airlines in Dallas before she met and married the love of her life, Horace Benton Hagler, on February 14, 1954.
Horace was a proud World War II veteran and was active in Veterans Organizations as well as in the Civil Air Patrol. Jane and Horace settled in Dallas where Horace ran several businesses and Jane was always by his side, doing the bookkeeping and raising the kids.
They sent their children to the best schools and got involved on every level. They were among the founders of the Lakehill Preparatory School in Dallas, and Horace could often be found delivering found furniture and other supplies to the school and Jane could be seen in the halls, helping in any way that she could. They assisted, encouraged their children to pursue bachelors and graduate degrees-education was so important to them.
Horace retired early and he and Jane bought a farm in Wills Point, Texas and travelled around the U.S., Mexico and Canada in their motorhome. Eventually, they moved to the Rio Grande Valley, where Jane had spent part of her childhood. They happily spent more time travelling, fishing, hanging out on the beach and birdwatching.
Horace passed away suddenly in 1996 but Jane stayed in the Valley. She was very active at First Baptist Church of La Feria, where she could be found working in local missions, in the church library, or the kitchen. Jane also volunteered teaching ESL, as a librarian at the Valley Baptist Academy, and with her church's after-school programs for kids..
A few years back, the house in the Valley got to be too much for her and she moved to Waxahachie, to be with Benton and Ladonna. She found a new home at First Baptist Church of Waxahachie.
One word that all would use to describe Jane is selfless-her family and friends always came first. Amye always said her Grandma Jane was her port in the storm. She loved children so much and could often be found with a lapful of them, often kids she had just met. She loved sports of all kinds and hardly ever missed a game of one of her favorite teams. She had a strong faith and was the essence of grace.
Horace and Jane will be interred together at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 10, 2016. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to First Baptist Church of Waxahachie Mission's Offering, FBC's Library Fund, or the Library Fund at First Baptist Church of La Feria, Texas.
