Mr. Smith passed away early Monday morning at the Medical Center of Arlington. He was born in Stephenville, TX. to Melvin Ewel and Tallulah (Quarles) Smith. He graduated from Lipan High School and attended John Tarleton State, Stephenville, for two years. He then graduated from DPS Academy in 1961. He was stationed in Waxahachie in 1974, serving as the Driver's License Trooper. Mr. Smith spent 32 years with DPS and retired in September 1993. His honors included Crime Stoppers Officer of the year, 1991-1992. He was Deputy/Bailiff for the Ellis County Sheriff's Department from 1993-2006. He and Shirley Broome were married February 1, 1964 in Riesel, TX. James had been a member of the Ferris Avenue Baptist Church since 1974 where he was also a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and served on various committees.
His survivors include: his mother, Tallulah Smith of Dennis, TX.; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Linda Smith of Lindale, TX., and Ricky and Jill Smith of San Antonio, TX.; sisters, Janice Smith and Alva Bratcher of Weatherford; grandchildren, Shelby Smith, Tyler James Smith, Brady Smith, Lindsey Smith, Trevor Smith and Blake Smith; and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and wife, Shirley, in 2003.
The family will receive friends and relatives 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of his Life will be 11 AM Thursday, June 15, 2006 at the Ferris Avenue Baptist Church, 1401 Ferris Avenue, Waxahachie, TX. 75165, with Pastor David Brown officiating. Pallbearers will be Ronald Lee Quarles, Marlin Quarles, Arlin Quarles, Dusty Autrey, Paul Davidson, and Jack Dineen. Honorary Pallbearers will be DPS and Sheriff's Officers. Interment will follow in the Waxahachie City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Ferris Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund.
