James Hobbs, Sr.

October 25, 1930 — August 25, 2017

James Howard Hobbs, Sr. passed away on August 25, 2017, at his home in Waxahachie surrounded by his loving wife, children, and friends. He was born on October 25, 1930, in Houston, Texas to Lester Lee and Annie Bell Van Hobbs. He found his lifelong passion in flying at 13 years old when he began flying his father's Piper Cub.

Howard grew up in Houston and graduated from Cypress-Fairbanks High School in 1947. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served as an AP Mechanic in the Korean War. He returned home to Houston and began his lifelong career as an industrial electrical contractor. He first worked for Hughes Tool company. In 1963 he moved to Angleton, Texas where he worked for Dow Chemical, then started his own company, Angleton Electric. In 1991, he moved to Waxahachie where he started Howard Contractors Inc.

In 2011, he married his caring wife, Gloria Beck Sullivan. Together, they made memories traveling and enjoying family, friends, and each other. Howard will be greatly missed by his many friends and large family. He will be most remembered for his charming sense of humor and tenacity for living life to the fullest. Howard was also kind, very giving, loving, generous, calm, cool, collected, level headed, a friend forever, persistent, a "character," and ever the rascal. He had countless fulfilling relationships that could be encompassed by any number of these adjectives. Whether you saw one side of him or every side, he was sure to have touched you in a special way.

He was a 60+ year member of the Masonic Lodge and a lifelong member of the Angleton Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He attended First United Methodist Church in Waxahachie
and he enjoyed being a part of the Builders Sunday School Class.

We would like to express a special thank you to Howard's doctors, Dr. Thacker and Dr. Schumacher; and caregivers, Katha Debase, Mary Hardin and Ramona Montemayor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ester Hobbs Goodman; and the mother of his children, Roberta Gaye Carmon.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; his children James Hobbs Jr. and wife Joyce, Cindy Camp Pope and husband David, Iva Lee Hobbs, Daryl Robert Hobbs and wife Lauren, Tracy Sullivan Terry and husband Seth and Patrick Sullivan and wife Allison; grandchildren Amanda and Donald Hayes, Weldon and Kristen Hobbs, Jamie and James Holland, Meagan Camp, Jonathan Hobbs, Alex Reed, Emme Sullivan, Lee Ryder, Will Terry, Campbell Sullivan, Johnny Ryder, Brooks Terry, and Beck Sullivan; great-grandchildren Will Hayes, Nora Hayes, Addie Hobbs, Emmaleigh Holland; sister, Fay Hobbs Williamson; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Tuesday, August 29, and services are at 10am on Wednesday, August 30. Both will be held at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. Burial at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery will follow services.
