Jack Adams Matthews, 84 of Waxahachie, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012 in a Dallas hospital. He was born to the late J. E. Matthews and Bessie Adams Matthews on August 31, 1928 in Mart, Texas. Jack graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, P. E. and later earned the title of Registered Professional Engineer. He was employed by Brown and Root Construction Company of Houston in the Heavy Estimating Department. He served as City Assistant Engineer for the City of Corsicana and later became City Engineer. He also served as City Engineer for the City of Killeen and Waxahachie. He retired from his position in Waxahachie after 30 years of service. Jack proudly served our country in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII and was in the 509th Bomb Group. Jack was a member of the American Legion, was an avid golfer, wood worker and loved shooting outdoors. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mattie Lou Matthews of Waxahachie; his son, Mickey Ray Matthews and his wife, Sherry of Waxahachie; his sister-in-law, Mary Frances Henry of Waxahachie; his granddaughter, Tammie Mcham and her husband, Doug of Waxahachie; his great grandson, David McHam and his wife, Kirsten; his great great granddaughter, Chloe McHam; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. E. and Bessie Matthews; his brother, Mickey James Matthews; his sister, Lilly Bess Matthews; and by his brother-in-law, Raymond Henry. Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the Birdston Cemetery, Navarro County, Texas with Dr. Leroy Fenton officiating.
