Colonel I. H. (Itch) Young, age 87
June 14, 1919
November 27, 2006
I.H.was born June 14, 1919 in Cambria, Wyoming to Ira Herbert and Anna Quist Young. He passed away peacefully November 27, 2006 in Waxahachie, Texas. Itch was raised in Deadwood, South Dakota. At a young age he had the opportunity to meet Clyde Ice, a pilot, and instantly became fascinated with flying. He began taking lessons from Clyde at the age of 14 and was certain that he was destined to be a pilot. I. H. attended Black Hills State College in order to follow his dreams and he fulfilled them by enlisting in the Army Air Corps (USAF) in 1940. Itch became quite an accomplished pilot. He not only was an instructor but also flew various missions and later became a personal pilot for General Joe Cannon (Commanding General of U. S. Air Force - Europe and tactical air command). He flew the C-54 in the Berlin airlift and B-57 nuclear attack bombers in Korea. I. H. was squadron commander of the 8th bomb squadron in Japan and of the four in El Paso, Texas.
After the Colonel retired from the Air Force in 1964, he became the personal pilot of Mr. Gibson, owner of Gibson Discount Stores.
I. H. lived a long, happy and successful life. His many adventures and victories in the Air Force are noted in the book "An Itch to Fly" by Robert E. Rader, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sally Young; his daughter, Jennie and her husband Steve Hargrove of Dallas; his grandchildren, Stephen, Kathryn and Trevor.
Itch will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father, "PawPaw", friend and "hero".
The family will receive friends and relatives 5-7 PM Wednesday at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of his Life will be 10 AM Thursday, November 30, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie with interment at 1:30 PM at the DFW National Cemetery, Dallas.
