Grady was born in Griffith Switch (Johnson County), Texas. He was one of twelve children ( 5 boys and 7 girls ) born to Ross Payton and Emily Cothran Payton. The family moved from Venus to Italy in 1925. Grady had to quit school at an early age to work on the farm. Grady married Lou Etta Varner on September 23, 1933. They had two Children Jerry Allen and Betty Joan. Grady was in the Navy a short time and was honorably discharged in 1944. He worked at various jobs during his life, including Classified Parking and Sharp's Hardware, before retirement. He was very good with figures and his mind was still sharp at his death. His wife Lou Etta passed on in July of 1979. Grady married Roma Tuley in September of 1980 and moved to Midlothian. They were members of the Midlothian Church of Christ. When Roma died in October of 1991, Grady stayed on at their Midlothian home until his death.
He is survived by his son, Jerry Allen Payton and daughter Tracy, of Midlothian, his daughter and son-in-law Betty and Louis Crump of Coppell, and sister Mrs. L.R. (Nona) Stonar of Waxahachie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lou Etta Varner Payton, his second wife Roma Tulley Payton, four brothers and six sisters.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 4 to 6 PM Sunday at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life will be 2:00PM Monday, December 1st, 2003 in the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel with Pastor Eddy Pitchford and Pastor Ronnie Wiggins officiating. Interment will follow at the Hillcrest Burial Park in Waxahachie, Texas.
