George Alderson Shawver
December 27, 1930
December 24, 2008

George Alderson Shawver was born December 27, 1930 in Perrin, Jack County, Texas. He was the only son of four children born to George Alderson Shawver I and Mary Lee Reynolds.

George began his career with Greyhound Bus Lines at age fourteen. It was during WWII and there was a shortage of working men on the home front. He was a tall young man who easily passed for eighteen. His first job was for the Post House, bussing tables and washing dishes. About a year later he started working for Greyhound, as a porter, or baggage agent. In 1945 the veterans started returning and were restored to their jobs and their seniority. Daddy at the tender age of 16 was "bumped" out of Dallas to Abilene. He didn't want to lose his job so he agreed to go. For six months he lived in a boarding house without support of his family and trying very hard to appear to be older.

After six months he returned to the Dallas Station where he would meet the love of his life, Betty Smithwick. She was a tiny dark haired beauty with chestnut eyes. Her job at Greyhound was renting pillows to travelers for fifty cents each. They were married three months later, on August 23, 1947. In August 2007, Daddy and Mama celebrated sixty years of marriage. Daddy retired from Greyhound after forty years in 1986 as the terminal Manager.

George is survived by his three children, Carol Ann Vincell and husband Roger, of Waxahachie, Tx; his son George Alderson Shawver Jr. of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Janet Lee Shawver of Duncanville, Texas. Four Grandchildren, Chris Bateman and wife Terri; Becky Moss, Libby Ashton, and George Alderson Shawver IV and wife Amber. Also surviving are three Great grandchildren, Tripp and Tanner Moss and Brandi Steele, and his youngest sister, Joann Wayland of Ft. Wort,h Texas as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty Jo Smithwick, his parents, his Maternal Grandparents, Osborn Lee Reynolds and Lydia Fannie Hartness; his Paternal Grandparents, Finis Monroe Shawver and Malinda Jane Callison, and two sisters, Mary Frances McCormick and Linnie Marion Freeman.

On Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 9:00 A.M., the family will have a visitation to morn their loss and celebrate Daddy's seventy eighth birthday with family and friends.. A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 10 A.M. Saturday morning also at Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
