George Wesley "Big Daddy" Hopgood went to be with his Heavenly Father and Lord on Friday, July 23, 2004. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost." Titus 3:5.

He was born October 1, 1948 in Waxahachie, Texas to Melvin D and Gertie Lee Hopgood. He graduated from Maypearl High School. He entered the Navy and served in Vietnam as a communication specialist with security. He received a degree from Texas State Technical Institution in Industrial Maintenance mechanics. He was employed at Chemical Reclamation Services in Avalon and other companies prior to being disabled in August 2001 due to liver disease.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Jessie Buckner Hopgood; two sons, Aaron Hopgood of Waxahachie and Donovan and Kimberly Hopgood of Glenn Heights, Texas; four brothers, Steve and Betty Hopgood, Eddie and Kathleen Hopgood, and Terry and Jeorgia Hopgood, Jerry and Allison Hopgood. Also surviving are three sisters, Cathie Brisendine, Sue and Eddy Jackson, Rose and Mark Stegall, two grandchildren, Clayton and Cadence Hopgood, father in law, Aubrey and Vergie Buckner, Sr. of Waco, a large number of nieces and nephews, and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Gertie Hopgood and a nephew Timothy Dake.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, July 25th from 3 to 5 PM at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of life service will be held on Monday, July 26, at l0 AM at Wayne Boze Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Pinson, Jr. and Rev. T.R."Dick" Bass officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Branch Cemetery.
