Dr. James Monroe Reid Jr. passed away peacefully with his family around him Friday, November 24, 2017. James was the son of the late James Monroe Reid Sr. and Icye Florine Horne Reid.
James Reid, Jr. was born in Ft. Worth, Texas. After graduating from high school, he attended and graduated from Howard Payne University with a double major in English and Bible. Having surrendered to the ministry prior to graduating, he went on to pursue a Masters of Theology degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Later in his career, he felt called to continue to pursue higher education, and graduated with a Doctor of Ministry degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1980.
In addition to his educational pursuits, James also served our country and is a veteran of the United States Air Force. During his 4 years of service, he was deployed to Korea to serve in air traffic control during the Korean War. Upon his Honorable discharge, he was offered a lucrative position as an Airport Traffic Control Operator for the DFW airport, but chose not to accept. Even though he felt a responsibility and duty to serve his country, his first love was the call he had on his life to serve the Lord in ministry and to serve God's people.
Dr. James Reid was a man of great accomplishments, but was also a very humble man. James worked as a salesman for Hanson Auto Supply in Ft. Worth, Texas from 1958-1963, while attending seminary. He entered into ministry, and across the span of more than 30 years, he served as pastor of several congregations, including Silver Valley Baptist Church, Silver Valley, Texas from 1956-1958; Lakeview Baptist Church, Ft. Worth, Texas from 1961-1963; First Baptist Church, San Saba, Texas from 1963-1967; First Baptist Church, Hondo, Texas from 1967-1973; and Northridge Park Baptist Church, San Antonio, Texas from 1973-1986.
While pastoring in San Antonio, he also served as a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas; Trustee of the Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary; and Trustee of the Baptist Hospital System of San Antonio.
In 1986, Dr. Reid left San Antonio after being called to become the Director of Missions in Corsicana, Texas. In this position, he served churches in Corsicana, Leon, Hill, and Bi-Stone Baptist Associations in Texas until he retired in 1997.
A life-long servant, and not quite ready to walk away from ministry after retirement, he returned to the pulpit and served as Interim Pastor of several churches over the following 9 years including Navarro Mills Baptist Church, Navarro Mills, Texas from January to June of 1998; First Baptist Church, Purdon, Texas from February to October 1999; Central Baptist Church, Blooming Grove, Texas from June of 2000 to June 2001; and Navarro Mills Baptist Church, Navarro Mills, Texas from October to December 2006.
Dr. James M. Reid Jr. devoted his life to serving his Lord.
In addition to all of his educational and career accomplishments, Dr. Reid had a love for photography, gardening and traveling. He never met a stranger and had a very inquisitive mind. His first question of anyone he ever met was "where do YOU go to church?" He loved to laugh and had a dry sense of humor; he was even known to have played "a prank or two." Every Christmas gift had a story behind it. He always cared more about what everyone else wanted than what he wanted. He was passionate about coffee, M&M's, and peanut butter, and couldn't go to bed without a bowl of ice cream. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, coffee at Starbucks, reading his Bible, marathon shopping adventures with Annett, road trips to Branson, and watching reruns of Andy Griffith.
As much as he loved all of these things, however, his love and devotion to his family was beyond any other love. One of his favorite things was listening to his wife play the piano, and he was his daughters' biggest fan.
James is survived by the love of his life, his beloved wife, Ellen Annett Smith Reid; two daughters whom he adored, Lenora Reid Kreitz and her husband Jon Tracy Kreitz of San Antonio, Texas; Donna Kay Reid Poole and her husband Robby Daniel Poole of Midlothian, Texas. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Lauren Elizabeth Salinas, Austin Reid Kreitz, Anthony Daniel Poole, Andrew Warren Poole, Alex Robert Poole, and Bethany Leigh Poole. He will also be missed by a host of friends who loved, respected and admired him.
Dr. Reid was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Delbert Reid.
