Dorothy Rose Speir
Dec. 29, 1922
Aug. 19, 2007
Dorothy Rose Speir passed from this world into the world of the eternal
living on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at the age of 84. She died in St.
Davids hospital after a three-week battle with pneumonia.
She was born Dec. 29, 1922, on a small cotton farm in Ferris. Her
parents, Robert Edward Kooken and Sonora Ola Rose Duff Kooken,
preceded her in death.
She was happily married for 25 years to James Edward Speir of Ennis.
They were married in New Orleans at the end of World War II when he returned
From Coast Guard duty in the Pacific Islands and were seldom apart again
Until his death in 1973.
She is survived by her son, Steve Speir of Austin, and many nieces,
nephews
and cousins including Bobby Taylor of Houston, Sherrie and Dub Green of
Waxahachie, Virginia Duff of Ferris, Donnie and Carol Gressett of
Kingwood, Craig Kooken of Houston, Hal Kooken of Huntsville and many cherished
Members of the Speir family throughout Texas.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Kooken Gressett,
brothers Billy Duff Kooken and Charles Hal Kooken.
Dorothy was a 1940 graduate of Waxahachie High School. After moving
from Oak Cliff to Waco in 1957, the Speirs built a successful business selling
carpet throughout Central Texas. In 1973, Dorothy became manager of the
Landmark Apartments in Waco. During her 20 years as manager, she was
named the Waco Apartment Association Manager of the Year twice and befriended two
generations of college students in Waco. Previously, she also served as
manager of the Lexington Apartments. She was a member of the Trinity
Methodist Church in Waco.
Dorothy loved life and approached it with laughter and a wry sense of
humor. Her sharp mind, wit, generosity and indomitable spirit attracted
friends of all ages and all walks of life. Her positive nature and zest for life
were infectious to everyone she came in contact with.
An eternal optimist, she was an ardent Democrat and a proud American
Who started each day with a crossword puzzle, her newspaper, C-SPAN and
coffee. She was an early supporter of Bill and Hillary Clinton and a big fan of
the Dallas Cowboys, Willie Nelson and Tiger Woods. She spent her last good
days watching Tiger in the PGA from her hospital bed.
The family would like to thank Regency Village Care for the care they
provided during her three-year residency in Austin with special thanks
to Jackie Humphries, Kim Harmon, Claire de Young, Steve Ashley and Dr.
Emmanuel Edoke for their kindness and friendship.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at
