Dorothy Hekking

October 26, 1933 — March 1, 2013

Dorothy Brown Hekking passed away peacefully on March 1, 2013 at home in Waxahachie, surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was known for her integrity, kindness, generosity, intelligence and faith. She was 89. Born in Tulsa on October 26, 1923, Dorothy attended school at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and went on to the University of Tulsa, graduating with B.S. and L.L.B. degrees. Always ahead of her time, she was the only woman in her law school class when few women pursued law as a career. Dorothy was an active member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. She moved to Waxahachie in 1958 and three years later founded Brown Realtors, the first real estate office in the city. She became a leader in the real estate community, and was responsible for recruiting and mentoring many in the profession. Dorothy was one of the founders and a past president of the Ellis County Board of Realtors. She also served on the Board of Directors of Citizens National Bank since 1973. Her creative business mind and unwavering positive attitude were apparent in all that she did. A firm believer in community service, Dorothy was always willing to help others. She and the Singleton family donated the land to the city of Waxahachie for Brown-Singleton Park. She delivered Meals-on-Wheels well into her 80‘s, served on the Waxahachie School Board and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Dorothy was a three-time past president of the Shakespeare Club, President of City Federation of Women's Clubs and member of the Heirloom Club. She loved politics and offered her time campaigning for national and local politicians. In college, she was President of Young Republicans. She was also an active member of the Eagle Forum of Dallas and the Dallas Public Affairs Luncheon Club. Dorothy was a devout Christian and loved her church. At St. Joseph's Catholic Church, she served as a past president of the St. Joseph's Altar Society, taught Sunday school for many years, and could always be counted upon to support and assist the church. Dorothy was preceded in death by her father and mother, Joseph Raymond Schulte and Christine Pink Schulte, and siblings John Schulte of Venezuela, Peggy Sanseverino and Raymond Schulte of Tulsa, and Mary Hotz of Freemont, Ohio. Her first husband, Russell Reynolds, was killed in a plane crash shortly after their marriage in Tulsa. She then moved to Waxahachie to marry Kenneth L. Brown, who died in 1986 after 28 years of marriage. Dorothy is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 11 years, Frederik J. Hekking, her daughter Stephanie Brown Pinkston and son-in-law Scott of Dallas, grandchildren Caroline and Philip, brother-in-law Billy Sanseverino and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Janet and Todd Henderson, Fred R. Hekking and his children Dexter and Haleigh, and Robin Hekking and Ron Grove. Dorothy was devoted to her family and very proud of her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, with whom she loved spending time. She also loved her four dachshunds who gave her great pleasure. She and Fred especially enjoyed going to the Dallas Summer Musicals and the Dallas Symphony with friends. Dorothy was loved and respected by everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed by all. The family will be receiving friends from 6-8 pm with a rosary at 7 pm on Friday, March 8 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Saturday, March 9 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made in Mrs. Hekking's honor to Saint Joseph's Building Fund, 512 E. Marvin Ave., Waxahachie, TX 75165. www.waynebozefuneralhome.com
