Doris Jean Owen Smith of Waxahachie and former resident of Red Oak passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017.
Doris Jean Owen Smith was born to the late Lester Owen and Bonnie Jewel Faulks Owen on September 26, 1923 in Waxahachie. She lived in Red Oak for 67 years. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1941. Doris Jean attended Daughans Business College. She retired from Red Oak Independent School District after 20 years. Doris Jean was a member of First United Methodist of Red Oak for 66 years before moving to First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie in 1991.
Doris Jean married Joe Wiley Smith on June 26, 1948. Doris Jean and her husband Joe along with her father Lester and mother Bonnie owned and operated the Red Oak Telephone Exchange for some 30 years until it was sold in 1960 to Southwestern Bell.
Doris Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Joe. Doris Jean is survived by her daughter Beverly Robinson and husband Jack of Waxahachie; son Stephen W. Smith and wife Lisa of Midlothian; four grandchildren: Jeff, Mike and Alex Robinson and their wives and Casey Smith Jacobs and her husband. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation with the family is scheduled for Friday, April 21, 2017 from 6-8 PM at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Waxahachie. Interment will follow in the Red Oak Cemetery in Red Oak, Texas.
