Doris Pressnell

Doris Mildred Pressnell, 92, died at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, Texas on Friday, June 28, 2013 after an extended illness. She was born on December 26, 1920 outside Red Oak, Texas to Burr Cockrell Pratt, Jr. (1896-1987) and Laura Irene Chapman (1895-1977). She was the second of three daughters. Her sisters were Virginia Ruth Atkiesson (1919-2008) and Freida Belle West (1923-2010). She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1938. She married Carl Allen Pressnell on December 31, 1940 in Waxahachie, Texas. They had two children: Glen Allen (1943-2001) and Laretta Gail. The family lived in Sardis, Texas in the 1940s and then moved to Midlothian, Texas in the 1950s. She was a talented homemaker renowned for her cooking, sewing, and gardening skills. She was famous for her delicious potato salad and pecan pies. She could construct outfits from patterns she created. She planted and harvested a vegetable garden almost every year of her life. She was dedicated to her family. She was never afraid of hard work from farming with her father to building houses for her children. She was keenly interested in living life organically. She enjoyed learning about history and how to live as our ancestors did. She also researched ways to use herbal remedies to cure illness and used this knowledge to extend her own life and to assist ailing family members. She was a long time member of the Midlothian church of Christ where her son had served as a deacon. She was also a long time contributor to bible translation services so that peoples around the world can read the bible in their own languages. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, her husband, her son and one of her grandsons, Brian Allen Pressnell (1967). She is survived by her daughter Gail Shaw Powell and her daughter-in-law Rheta Pressnell. She is survived by four grand children- Derek Shaw and his wife Melissa, Sherry Pressnell, Laura Shaw Buchanan and her husband Tim, and Matthew Pressnell and his wife Karrie. She is also survived by ten great grandchildren- Kaylie Sanford, John Granger, Jeremy Shaw, Logan Shaw, Taylor Treibly, Tatum Pressnell, Tallen Pressnell, Brandy Buchanan, Tiffany Buchanan and James Parker. Visitation will be conducted at Wayne Boze funeral home in Waxahachie, Texas on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be conducted at the Midlothian church of Christ on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Red Oak Cemetery in Red Oak, Texas.
