Don was born on November 9, 1942 in Taft, CA. to the late Donald Dean (Jimmy) and Elyven Settlemyer. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia Ann Settlemyer; his two children, son Donald Dean Settlemyer III with wife Pam Settlemyer of Waxahachie, and daughter, Cylinda Settlemyer Barron with husband Dr. Charlie Nelms Barron of Slidell, LA; his five grandchildren, Donald Dean Settlemyer IV, Daniel Eugene Settlemyer and Tressa RaeAnn Settlemyer of Waxahachie, and Alexandra Noel Barron and Christopher Nelms Barron of Slidell, LA; two brothers, Mike Settlemyer of Navarre, FL., and Eddie Settlemyer with wife Sharon of Richland, TX.; three sisters, Cynthia Malone with husband Patrick of Burleson, TX., Sylvia Bietendorf with husband James of Duncanville, TX., and Betty Crawford with husband James of Waxahachie; 15 nieces and nephews; and 21 great nieces and nephews.
Don graduated in 1961 from Duncanville High School and in 1968 from the University of Texas at Arlington with a degree in economics. He married his high school sweetheart Pat on June 29, 1962. Don and Pat built their home in Waxahachie in 1967, where they raised their two children. Don worked for 32 years at Lockheed Martin, formerly LTV, before retiring in 1999. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Waxahachie, where he served as a Deacon, choir and orchestra member, Sunday School Class director, and participated in several mission trips in and outside of the United States. He was a Reserve Department Deputy for the Ellis County Sheriff Department for 21 years.
Don enjoyed flying. After getting his pilot's license in 1976, he owned and flew several Cessna airplanes. He recently fulfilled his dream to build his own airplane when he finished a two-passenger Zodiac 601. He gave it a special touch by painting a Texas-flag star on the tail and logged 4-hours of flight time. He also enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and camping. He rode and cared for his horse Blue for 35 years. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and other outdoor activities. After his retirement, Don and Pat were fortunate to be able to travel the world, visiting 10 countries including China, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.
