Daryl Jene Schliep, 85, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2013 at his home in Waxahachie. He was born January 12, 1928 in Hastings, NE, to Earl Schliep and Doris Hamburger Schliep. Daryl lived in Nebraska and South Dakota until age 12 when his family moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma, where he graduated from high school just prior to the close of WWII. Daryl entered the United States Army and served with the occupation forces in Japan. After receiving several service medals and his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with his pharmacy degree. While in school, he met the love of his life, Geraldine Sypert, who was teaching on the music department faculty. They were married on July 9, 1955, and moved to Crockett, Texas where Daryl worked at the Christy Pharmacy. An opportunity arose in Waxahachie, and in March 1957, Daryl and Gerrie moved here with their baby, Susan, when he purchased the Williams Rexall Drug on the south side of the downtown square. Renamed Daryl's Rexall Drug, the store was a popular downtown destination complete with a soda fountain. In 1967 Daryl moved his store to Jefferson Street across from the hospital and christened it "Daryl's Prescription Shop", where he served as owner and pharmacist until selling the business in 1979; it is still operating today as "The Prescription Shop." After "retiring", as he dubbed it, he worked for Eckerd Drug, Winn Dixie Pharmacy, Wal-Mart Pharmacy, and Lone Star Drug before truly retiring. He generously donated his services to the pharmacy operation at Hope Clinic in Waxahachie as well. Daryl was a man who deeply cherished his family and rarely missed a music recital, school event or tennis match featuring his daughter Susan, and later was equally involved with the myriad activities involving his grandsons Justin, Kevin, and D.J. He racked up countless hours at soccer, football, baseball, volleyball, and basketball games; at cello. violin, and piano recitals, grandparents' days and so on. He always had a smile on his face and words of encouragement, and was extremely proud of each one and their accomplishments in all their endeavors. He was a deeply spiritual man and gave of his time and energy to support the First Christian Church, serving as Board Chairman, along with many other church committees and the Christian Youth Foundation. He later joined the First United Methodist Church in Waxahachie and could be found there most Sundays and at special events at the church. Daryl also was continuously active in community organizations and events, and would be sure he was well informed about whatever matters were brought before him in order to offer thoughtful and sound advice. It is said that he could be rather opinionated at times. Some of the organizations and committees he served on included: Waxahachie Foundation Board, Waxahachie Planning and Zoning Commission, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Waxahachie Rotary Club and Board (in May 2012 he was awarded Life Membership in the Waxahachie Rotary Club, an organization that he greatly admired and for which he felt a true calling to serve in any capacity he could), the Waxahachie Symphony Association Board (Past Chairman), Historic Waxahachie, volunteer docent at the Ellis County Museum, Jaycees, Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, tour guide for the Ellis County Courthouse at events on the Square, tour guide for Gingerbread Trail, he was the "winemaker" at Bethlehem Revisited, and many more. Speaking of winemaking, one of his passions was making wine, and he always had a cupboard full of homemade jelly that he loved to give away. Daryl was always puttering around in the kitchen and loved to cook (managing to get flour on the ceiling on at least one occasion); at other times he could be spotted outside in his yard wearing his overalls, grafting pecan trees, harvesting blackberries, pruning branches, and splitting logs for firewood. Daryl was full of country wisdom and humor and was well known throughout Waxahachie despite his never seeking the limelight. He is beloved by Gerrie as the perfect husband and by Susan as the perfect father, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him and especially his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Doris, and by his sister Sharon Schliep Payne. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Geraldine Sypert Schliep, daughter Susan and son-in-law Dr. Jeff Kosoris, grandsons Justin Kosoris, Kevin Kosoris and wife Samantha, who he referred to as his granddaughter, and Daryl Kosoris, and great grandson Charles Alexander Kosoris. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 12 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie and the service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 13 at the First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie. Pallbearers will be: Dr. Jeff, Justin, Kevin, and Daryl Kosoris. Jack Price, Dr. Don Locke, Dr. Jim Fanning, Dr. Nelson Jones, Mike Ramsey, and Sam Meade. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jim Hightower, Joe Jenkins, Bob McGinnis, Bob Lewis, and members of the Rotary Club of Waxahachie. Daryl's choices for memorials in lieu of flowers are the Waxahachie Rotary Club, the First United Methodist Church, and the Ellis County SPCA. www.waynebozefuneralhome.com
